You can find hundreds of books about Reiki on the market. Some are very good but most just don't give you the information that you need or are filled with unsubstantiated "facts".

These are the books that I consider to be among the best that are available.

Why are there so many books?

Since then attention to Reiki has grown exponentially, and so have the number of books written about it.

The varieties of Reiki have increased as well as people combine healing systems and branch away from Reiki as it was taught by Mikao Usui. This is not to say that such methods are not as good, they are merely different.

1. Essential Reiki: A Complete Guide to an Ancient Healing Art by Diane Stein

This book provides a good basic background on Reiki.

When first published it was quite controversial within Reiki circles because it was the first published book to contain illustrations of the Reiki symbols and variations of each.

Reading this book taught me was that the way I learned the symbols through my teacher was not exactly the same as the way others were learning the symbols. And yet, they all worked!

2. The Original Reiki Handbook of Dr. Mikao Usui by Mikao Usui, Christine M. Grimm

Reiki as it was taught by Dr Usui in Japan. The focus is more on using your intuition and less on set hand positions. However, specific hand positions used to treat different ailments are illustrated.

This referenced history of Reiki contains some of the most detailed and verifiable information currently available.
